New Way to Help Prevent Hair Loss During Chemotherapy: Latest Research

Scientists in the UK found a new way that might help cancer patients to keep their hair during chemotherapy. Hair loss has been one of the most visible and emotionally difficult side effects of chemotherapy.

The method uses two things:

  1. A cold cap to cool the scalp, well known for lowering the temperature of the scalp
  2. A tropical antioxidant lotion, formulated to reduce the damage done due to chemotherapy drugs.

When used together, they protect hair from follicle damage.

Chemotherapy kills fast-growing cancer cells, but it also hurts healthy cells in hair roots. This is why many people lose their hair during treatment.

Cooling the scalp helps by slowing down blood flow. This means less medicine reaches the hair. But for some people, the cold cap doesn’t work well enough.

The tropical antioxidants lotion helps protect the hair even more. It works best when used with the cold cap.

“Our aim is to make scalp cooling more effective and more accessible,” added Dr. Georgopoulos. “We believe this approach will not only reduce hair loss during chemotherapy but also help patients recover hair more quickly after treatment.”

The study was done at Sheffield Hallam University and shared in a science journal Frontiers in Pharmacology.

Next, the scientists want to test the new method on real patients. They hope it will be used in hospitals soon.
