Telogen Effluvium

What Is Telogen Effluvium (TE)?

Telogen effluvium is a common type of hair loss condition that is known for excessive hair shedding. It occurs when a large number of hair follicles shift prematurely from the growing (anagen) phase into the resting (telogen) phase, leading to visible shedding. While alarming, TE is typically temporary and reversible.

What Causes Telogen Effluvium?

Telogen effluvium is usually triggered by a physical or emotional shock to the body. The most common causes include:

  • Severe or prolonged stress
  • Hormonal changes (e.g., postpartum, menopause)
  • Acute illness or high fever
  • Surgery or trauma
  • Nutritional deficiencies (especially iron or protein)
  • Medications
  • Toxin or environmental exposure
  • Sudden or dramatic weight loss

Our Hair Loss Clinic conducts a detailed scalp analysis, lifestyle review, and health history to tailor a care plan that fits your individual profile.

Types of telogen effluvium

Acute and chronic are the two know types of telogen effluvium.

Acute telogen effluvium is the type that doesn’t exceed six months in most cases, where your hair loss rapidly occurs in the space of two to three months after changes to your body or a stressful occurrence. A telogen effluvium gets resolved in most cases.

When it comes to chronic telogen effluvium it lasted more than six months. It may be visible all over the scalp without a clear picture of the cause. The shedding or hair falling at the early stage of chronic telogen effluvium may be worrysome and may not lead to baldness.

Who Can Be Affected by Telogen Effluvium?

Telogen effluvium can affect both men and women, though it is more commonly seen in women due to hormonal fluctuations.

Common triggers by group:

  • Postpartum women: Hair shedding begins 2–3 months after delivery and often resolves naturally within 6 months.
  • Menopausal women: Hormonal changes can contribute to chronic TE.
  • After illness or infection: TE is common after recovery from conditions like COVID-19 or a high fever.

Is Telogen Effluvium Treatable?

Yes. Telogen effluvium is a treatable condition, especially when the underlying cause is identified and addressed. Once the trigger is eliminated, the shedding slows down, and new hair begins to grow within a few months.

How is telogen effluvium treated?

Telogen effluvium is treated by accurately identifying and addressing the underlying cause or trigger. Once resolved, hair typically begins to regrow naturally. However, in some cases, regrowth may be slow. This is where a specialist’s expertise is essential—to create a personalized plan that supports healthy and accelerated hair regrowth.

  • Leave a stress-free life, or find a way to cope with stress if it happens.
  • Eat a balanced diet, do not neglect fruits and vegetables, as they help keep hair looking and feeling healthy.
  • Medication management is important since we understand that medications may trigger telogen effluvium.
